17th Annual Bikes For Tykes Poker Run

By Ron Cox

Under a clear, cloudless sky and a crisp morning temperature, more than 100 riders and passengers met at Moose Lodge #1782 to participate in the 17th Annual Bikes For Tykes Poker Run sponsored by the Paradise Chapter(Naples) of the Harley Owners Group.

The Moose Lodge hosted a $5 all-you-can-eat buffet breakfast and followed that up with burgers and tube steaks at a nominal cost when the riders returned in the afternoon. Funds raised will be applied to Moosehaven, a residence in Jacksonville for seniors with 15 or more years of membership or Mooseheart, a Moose sponsored orphanage in Chicago.

Set up in the Lodge parking lot, Naples HOG laid out a number of silent auction prizes, a huge quilt made from Harley T-shirts and a rocking horse which was auctioned off and the after ride check in table. Mike Rhodes rode off (on his Victory) with the Best Poker Hand and $200, he had a royal straight flush. Mike donated a portion of his winnings back to the Bikes For Tykes fund. The fund received a shade more than $3,000 from the Paradise Chapter.

Bikes For Tykes is a national organization which, due to the poor economy, has seen some of its Chapters dissolve, but it still numbers more than 30 active Chapters. Bikes For Tykes mission is to locate and accept donated bicycles, recondition them and make them road worthy. The bikes are turned over to The Children’s Network whose counselors decide who will receive them. Paradise HOG’s role is to raise funds through events like this that will pay for the supplies needed to recondition the bikes.

Paradise HOG Director Kent Kolegue emceed the event and distributed the prizes and the 50/50 prize of $165 to Diane Hemmer. Kent noted that plans are in the works to upgrade and improve Bikes For Tykes next year.
