Last Leg Rally 2012 Fernandina Beach

By Lulu

Fernandina Beach on Amelia Island just north of Jacksonville is the host site for a yearly event right before Bike Week each year. The name of the event signifies the last of your journey before hitting Daytona when riding down from other states. The cause of the event is what makes the event newsworthy. Each year the event is held to help fund deep sea fishing excursions for injured veterans.

Steve Hair captains a boat out of Fernandina Beach and the boat is outfitted to handle most disabilities. Last Leg Rally starts with a Meet and Greet on Friday night and a bike ride on Saturday that ends at Main Park. In the park bands are playing on stage and vendors line the park with food, refreshments and various wares. Saturday there is a bike show and Sunday a car show.

This year we were only available for Saturday afternoon due to other commitments. I hate we missed a flyover by Dreamland Squadron and Avenger Air Show. Even with high winds and predictions of intense rain they had over 150 sign up for the ride and the weather held up for a pleasant afternoon, although vendors were physically holding their tents down due to high winds.

A special presentation was made to Wanda and Steve Hair by a supporter and friend, Mel that had just returned from Afghanistan. A commissioned American flag that had flown over Afghanistan in Fob Sharana and a commemorative coin were given to them. They flew the flag proudly over the POW/MIA flag during the event. Many of the local clubs including the Ground Pounders, Wheels of Faith, US Coast Guard Auxiliary, Legion Riders FL Chapter 88, American Legion Riders Auxiliary Unit 54, Legion Riders FL Chapter 54, Sons of American Legion Squadron 54 and the Combat Veterans MC Asso. #20-2 helped support this worthy cause in a variety of ways. I am certain that Wanda and Steve want to thank all who support their event and thank all of you who took your weekend to spend with them. Ride on in to Fernandina Beach next year for a very worthy cause.
