Inaugural Sons Of Speed Vintage Motorcycle Race
By Deborah Speicher
One of the highlights of Daytona Bike Week 2017 was the Sons of Speed Vintage Motorcycle Race held on March 18 at New Smyrna Speedway. The brainchild behind this event was none other than renowned bike builder, Billy Lane. In addition to organizing this event, Billy personally worked on several of the chassis for the pre-1925 motorcycles. At the practice races the day before, I saw Billy, along with his brother Warren, riding, wrenching, pushing bikes and otherwise moving nonstop around the track and pit stop area.
On Friday, there were sixteen motorcycles which turned into twelve on the day of the race due to mechanical issues. This type of racing involving old motorcycles with skinny tires at high speeds can be dangerous and, thankfully, there was only one minor incident on practice day. Racer Rhett Rotten (“Wall of Death” fame) had both tires simultaneously go out on him and he went down. However, he was back the next day to race. His bike was appropriately named “Death Trap”!
There were other motorcycle celebrities in the race – Paul Cox (“Indian Larry Legacy”), Buzz Kanter (“American Iron Magazine”), Josh Owens (“Moonshiners” television show) and Rick Petko (“American Chopper” television show).
First place was won by Brittney Olsen, second place by Matt Harris and third place by Shelly Rossmeyer-Pepe (GM of Destination Daytona). With two women taking top awards in this race, looks like they may have to rename this “Sons and Daughters of Speed” for future events! Kudos to Billy Lane — I can’t wait to catch another one of these events at future motorcycle rallies.
Twisted Tea Bike Night At St. John’s River Grill
By Lulu
Bike Night on Wednesdays on the St. John’s River just west of Deland on 44 has become a popular spot to eat, drink and be merry! The band on our Twisted Tea Bike Night was Penta and they were a crowd favorite. Thanks to the generous crowd we raised $127 and 35 pounds of food for the Second Harvest Food Bank in Volusia County. Miss Twisted Tea, Nicole sampled lots of peeps that had never sipped Twisted Tea before and they were all happy to take home cozies and bandanas as souvenirs of the night!
The Florida Biker Awareness Rally
By Anne Barrows
The Florida Biker Awareness Rally in Ocala was a great success for its first rally. The event was attended and supported by bikers from Ft. White to Cocoa, and as far west as the Tampa region. Several local motorcycle clubs attended and volunteered their time to help make this happen. Mother Nature did not want to cooperate. The bikers rallied and raised a great amount of funds for the six designated bikers in need. The ride was shortened due to weather. When they stopped at Black Bear Pub on Rt. 40 owner “Mama Bear”, Tammy Lynn Daneszewski returned to the rally with the bikers, and also gave a large $ donation. Great speakers from the Forest ABATE chapter to the largest financial supporter Steven A. Bagen Law Firm had the riders’ attention. Over 20 vendors were on site. The bands Mike Smithson, Copper Gypsy and to close off the night Infuzion Band rocked the crowd to the end. The Florida Biker Awareness looks forward to their next event. Watch Thunder Roads for info on their next event!
Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans & Dogs
By Deborah Speicher
On Saturday, March 25, 2017, Vietnam era veterans and their war dogs were given the “welcome home” they deserve at Veterans Memorial Park in Tampa. Several veterans came out to give some truly heartfelt speeches and made us realize that it really stirred up old memories which many wanted to forget. One such speaker was Colonel Ron Rook (Ret. USMC). Colonel Rook spoke about how most of the men in his regiment were lost on a mission and also about coming home. Coming back to the United States during the Vietnam War was just about as dangerous, as protesters had started shooting returning soldiers. Colonel Rook had to wear civilian clothing and could have no trace of military clothing or paraphernalia with him when he came back to the States during the war.
The other unsung heroes of that era were the war dogs. Dogs trained and taken to Vietnam were then either left in Vietnam or euthanized. This was so unfair for those loyal canines who served and saved many lives. Barbara Snow from the US War Dogs Association Southern Chapter 2 spoke about the history of war dogs and how dogs can now properly retire from service.
This was a great ceremony which included all Vietnam era veterans receiving a pin to commemorate their service, POW/MIA table ceremony and The Last Patrol. The Last Patrol was created by the Suncoast Vietnam Veterans who reenact the last days of the Vietnam War utilizing a K-9 dog, smoke and music from that era.
At the conclusion, all attendees were treated to free food and dessert courtesy of VFW Post 8108 Riverview Ladies and Men’s Auxiliaries. FYI – Veterans Memorial Park is free and open to the public. In addition to various park displays, there is the Rear Admiral LeRoy Collins Jr. Veterans Museum.
The event was well done and powerful. Welcome home all!
Let’s Ride Grand Opening In Port Richey
By Lulu
In Port Richey, right smack dab on US 19 is a motorcycle specialty shop that carries motorcycle gear, accessories and apparel. To celebrate their grand opening their lot was filled with vendors, food and a bike show. Live music filled the air with Mustang Mafia rocking the large crowd. You can’t meet a nicer person than Lisa the owner who was scurrying around the shop as men and women were cashing in on the 15% off the entire store.
B.A.C.A. Scavenger Hunt
By Ron Cox
The City of Palms Chapter of Bikers Against Child Abuse (B.A.C.A.) hosted a Passport Run/Scavenger Hunt on April 22nd to raise funds to support its programs to provide for wounded children. The Ft. Myers Chapter is the largest of the 10 Chapters in Florida. B.A.C.A. is an international effort with chapters in 12 countries and 47 states in the U.S. More chapters are being formed internationally.
More than 70 riders/passengers assembled at VFW Post 10127 in North Ft. Myers under threatening skies to register and get directions for the first stop. After a blessing of the bikes, small groups set out to capture the required items.
Riders/passengers ended up at American Legion Post 110 in Port Charlotte. BBQed food, salads, liquid refreshments, an auction and a plethora of raffle prizes awaited the group.
Using their “road names” (don’t ask me why) Bounce won the Scavenger Hunt top prize of two round trip tickets aboard the Key West Express. Juicy won the $133 50/50.
B.A.C.A. exists with the intent to create a safer environment for abused children. It exists as a body of bikers to empower children to not feel afraid of the world in which they live. B.A.C.A. stands ready to lend support to our wounded friends by involving them with an established united organization. B.A.C.A. works in conjunction with local and state officials who are already in place to protect children.
On the bottom of every member’s vest is the B.A.C.A. motto “No child deserves to live in fear.”
Vet-Jam Music Fest

This year the Battle of the Bands Inc. who host the Vet-Jam Music Fest reached out to the Gathering of the CLUBS (GOC) to sponsor the 1st Annual Ride-in. The Gathering of the CLUBS is made up of most of the motorcycle clubs, associations and riding enthusiast in the county. American Legion Riders Chapter 54, in Fernandina Beach held their Bunnies for Babies II dice run. The dice run stopped at several posts and Bar Z. At each stop bunny games were held, and prizes handed to the winners. Proceeds from the Bunnies for Babies Run were to help benefit Nassau County Health Department, Well Babies Department. Items collected ranged from diapers, socks, bottles, clothes, baby blankets and sippy cups. Bunnies for Babies couldn’t have asked for a nicer day and upon return to Post 54, a pork loin dinner was served to all riders. Big Bike Night At Earl’s Hideaway
By Lulu
One of my favorite places to go is in Sebastian. Earl’s Hideaway has a great inside bar and then a tiki like outside courtyard complete with sand. This bar is very cool. Not only do they love their bikers…they love good music! Blues is often the music of choice. But they also do lots of good rock and roll. Their bike night is weekly on Thursday nights, but once a month they blow it up a bit with Space Coast H-D bringing in giveaways, a Dyno for you to check out and the one we rode down for had Love Valley on stage. Young men that weren’t born when these musicians hit the radio, were rockin’ classics from the 70s including Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, and Allman Brothers. If you get a chance to see these kids you will be glad you did! Franni knows good music and searches for that rare gem and brings them to their slice of paradise! While you are there have a giant slice of pizza to go with your alcohol! There are lots of cool places to stay so make a night of it!
Tilted Kilt Kicks Off Monthly Bike Night Season
By Lulu
Riding season is in full swing. And no better place to ride to on the first Saturday of the month than the Tilted Kilt in Ocala. Their bike nights start with Happy Hour prices, great food and GREAT music! The place is swarming with hot kilted girls, so gentlemen “Start your engines!” The first one of the season had one of my favorites Bobby Friss taking the stage! Every month the bands are exceptional! A beautiful ride from all directions so come out and play in Ocala!
Hot Times At Cold River Saloon
By TJ Costa
The first weekend in April marked the grand opening for the Cold River Saloon in Punta Gorda with owners, Ken and Dee, throwing one hell of a bash to celebrate. On Saturday, Storm Warning was ripping up classic tunes, the crowd was rocking and the ice-cold beer flowed. A fantastic pig roast prepared by Rick Sechrist kept bellies full and happy, with sides provided by Mike and Tammy Livingston. The following day was Cold River’s regular first Sunday of the month Bike Bash and nobody missed a beat! Lippy’s catered a great BBQ and the Forbidden Fruit Farmers rocked all day with plenty of $12 beer buckets quenching everyone’s thirst. Ken and Dee brought their Maine hospitality to southwest Florida at the old Tilly’s Tap and are quickly establishing a “Cheers” like atmosphere which makes it a favorite stop on my monthly statewide trek. Plan a trip to Punta Gorda, book a room at the Punta Gorda Waterfront Hotel, explore this cool town and make Cold River Saloon your party spot. Just a short ride from downtown the owners and their friendly bartenders, Christie, Angela and Toni are always happy to welcome thirsty patrons with a big smile and an ice-cold beer.

Playing In The Cat Box June 2017
By Danny Martin
Hey everybody that time again let’s learn how to fix something. This time we’re going to put new brakes on our 2000 thru 2007 Harley-Davidson. It is going to be so easy you’re going to wonder why do shops even charge for it. Personally, in my shop when you buy new tires I always tell people let’s put pads on it. I only charge them for the pads it’s so simple. The tools we are going to need are some 12 point sockets, a 3/8 drive millimeter 12 point a ¼ inch drive 12 point and a medium to large flathead screwdriver. The pads that I prefer to use are the Drag Specialties 1721-1365 for about $25. I use sintered material this is supposed to cut down on the dust. We don’t need a lift for this or anything so if you’re ready get your stuff in order and let’s go.
First, when I get ready to do brakes I tell everybody loosen up that ¼ inch 12 point that holds the pads inside the caliper. Do not completely remove it. Loosen it enough so that it’s easier to remove the complete bolt when you have the caliper in your hand. With the pads being loosened go ahead and take your 3/8 drive 10 mm and take the bolts out of the caliper removing it from the rotor before continuing to take out the old brake pad. Use your medium to large size screwdriver and basically pry it in there to squeeze open the pistons making more room for the pads with more material so they will easily go back over the rotor. Once you have that done take out the 2 smaller ¼ bolts. Pay attention to which way the pads come out, put them back in and put it all back together in reverse. If you have blue or even some red Loctite you can put a drop back onto the caliper bolt. Be sure to tighten the ¼ inch and 3/8 very firmly, snugly or whatever, once they are both back on the fork leg.
With one side being done let’s go over to the other side and do the exact same thing. If you have a Touring bike, once your pads are installed tightened and caliper returned to the fork leg remember to squeeze your brake lever a few times to reseat the pad on to the rotor or you’re going to have one hell of a wakening when you try to drive away. Well there you go I told you this was going to be easy. Once again if you have any questions or if you have something that you would like to see me cover please contact me at the magazine with your suggestions or complaints. I will do my best to address everything in the style you are becoming accustomed to with me. Thanks for playing in the Cat Box.

Eustis’ Run For The Moving Wall
By Lulu
If you haven’t made it to D.C. and experienced the Vietnam Wall, you just must! But for those of you who just can’t make that trip, cities can host the Moving Vietnam Wall. And the City of Eustis decided to do just that and to bring The Wall to their Eustis Music Fest. You cannot begin to understand what this means to Vietnam Veterans and their families who may never get the chance to visit The Wall in D.C. A ride was organized to help fund this endeavor and lots of patriotic folks showed up for the event. The ride started at Ferran Park with stops including Gator Grill, Pirats Oasis, Gator Harley-Davidson and the clubhouse of the Lake County US Military Vets. These stops, sponsors, the City of Eustis and those who took their time to ride on for this cause deserve a great big thank you for bringing such a meaningful tribute to this part of the state for all to be able to experience.
Bayer Chases Away Headaches, Stomach Aches And Sun Burns
By Lulu
If you have been to any of the major rallies in the USA you have probably been given samples of Bayer Aspirin, Alka-Seltzer, Aleve, Claritin, Dr. Scholl’s or Coppertone from a tent set up at key locations. I call the packets they hand out “hangover kits”, although they are much more! From Sturgis to Washington, D.C., from Destination Daytona during Bike Week and Biketoberfest to Gator Harley-Davidson during Leesburg Bike Fest you will see their promo tents with smiling faces handing out samples as fast as they can gather them up.
I have ridden from Daytona to Washington D.C. to the Vietnam Wall with Rolling Thunder. Most riding on 2 and 3 wheels are Vietnam Vets…making them a bit on the side of older…just like me! And I can tell you they are happy to see the Bayer tent for their sore bones from the long ride! This promotion does in fact get their name out, but let’s be real; everyone knows their product and their brands. Their participation in the rallies sets them apart from other businesses…they participate in this world we love call motorcycling. I want to ask you to remember them and buy their products when you need relief! The company could easily spend the money on TV ads, but stepping into our world at these events needs our loyalty as consumers! There are plenty of competitors on the shelf when you visit your local pharmacy or convenience store for your aches and pains, but those competitors are not handing out free samples in OUR world of bikers are they?
I heard recently someone was biking cross country and started having severe chest pains someone came along and opened their Bayer sample…gave it to him and was credited by the EMTs for saving the biker’s life! Keep some of their product in your bike the life you save could be your own!!
And the last public service announcement I need to deliver is the sun is not our friend. Being on a motorcycle we are exposed to more hours of sun on our faces, ears, lips and hands than our friends who ride in a covered vehicle. The more hours of sunburn the greater the risk of skin cancer. So, thank the guys or girls in the Bayer tents for reminding us with their samples to USE SUNSCREEN! Our skin is our largest organ and our greatest defense against dehydration and infection. We need to protect ourselves every time we go outside! You can’t even wear sunglasses if you lose an ear to skin cancer! Apply, apply, apply…several times a day!
As far as I can see this should be the biker friendly company of the year!!!
Gulf Coast Ladies Motorcycle Rally
By Marta Rose-Thorpe
The 2017 Gulf Coast Ladies Motorcycle Rally was pure fun-in-the-sun during April Fool’s Weekend in Panama City Beach, Florida. Attendees rode into “The World’s Most Beautiful Beaches” south from Atlanta and came up north from Ft. Myers… and Florida cities in between. Hosted by Harley-Davidson of Panama City Beach, the Thunder Angels and volunteers, this event kicked off springtime with beautiful weather, live music, great vendors and a clan of happy women doing what they love to do: RIDE!
On Friday, March 31 the rally kicked off with a “Final Friday Bike Night” party featuring old country greats Tex & the South Forty, an Outpost favorite. The cold beer was flowing, served up by American Legion Post 402 & VFW Post 10555, with free Craft Beer Tastings by local brewery Nivol Brewing Co.
Saturday morning started with a beautiful North Florida sunrise, coffee and camaraderie. At 10 AM the Thunder Angels lead a Guided Scenic Ride that headed west to three points: the nature-packed Conservation Park; the stunningly beautiful Eden Gardens in South Walton County; and the biker-favorite Outpost off Highway 20. Attendees returned to Harley in the early afternoon and were treated to a free bike wash, a tasty lunch donated by Chicken Salad Chick, a ladies-themed vendor village packed with apparel, jewelry, health products, pin striping, sunglasses and more. The Don Pedigo Band headed down from Nashville for two Saturday afternoon concerts, and Barbara Jones of the Thunder Angels lead a Storytelling Hour on the Chill Deck, where rally-goers gathered ‘round and swapped riding tales. A five-class bike competition took place in the late afternoon with home-made trophies by BC Custom Metalworks. That evening the fun progressed to Newby’s for live music by everyone’s favorite local reggae band, Heritage.
On Sunday morning, the sunshine continued to sparkle while Night Al Productions supplied karaoke on the Harley Stage, and Rally volunteers served up mimosas and breakfast burritos on the Big Deck. By 12 noon most riders hit the road via one of four routes: Highways 231, 77, 79 or Old 98. On the way home ladies were asked to take a few selfie photos to later post onto the Gulf Coast Ladies Motorcycle Rally Facebook page with fun captions.
Throughout the weekend, a photo competition was taking place behind the scenes. Ladies were asked to take photos all weekend and post to the Facebook page. The photos could be submitted into one of four classes of photos, and the best in each class won a prize. Most Scenic won a wine basket donated by Triple H Dustless Blasting. Sportiest won a 4-team Golf Basket from Holiday Golf Club in Panama City Beach. Goofiest won a one-hour massage donated by local PCB masseuse Tom Nummy; and Most Unique won a two-night stay at Copperhead Lodge in Blairsville, GA, donated by Michelle Evans. To view winners as well as all rally photos, go to Facebook/sandandsass.
